The Finnish Salty Liquorice Association (Suomen Salmiakkiyhdistys) is a non-profit consumer organization, founded 1997 in Helsinki. We give the Salmiakki Finlandia Award for the best salty liquorice sweet of the period.

We organize salty liquorice events Salmiakkigaala and Salmiakkipiknik. They started back in the 1990’s.

Despite the grandiose title of Salmiakkigaala, it is a playful description for a bar event in Helsinki with lots ’n’ lots of black candies.

Usually there’s an overwhelming salty liquorice buffet, Salmiakki Finlandia Award, live music by our elegant house band Jahnukaiset, DJ and possibly competitions.

At every Salmiakkigaala we present a new Salmiakki Finlandia Award jury. Here’s one of them: Mr. Pertti Jarla, possibly the most popular cartoonist in Finland at the moment.  He’s working on new Fingerpori cartoons with salmiakki goodies on his table. Photo: Finnish Salty Liquorice Association

The Association’s ruling organ is called salmiakkikonklaavi, the Salmiak Conclave. Each year, we nominate roundabout six products to enter the Salmiakki Finlandia contest. The sweets can be either classics or newcomers, made in Finland or elsewhere. Our Conclave chooses & invites 1-2 respected citizens (usually artistic figures) to the jury. On stage at Salmiakkigaala, the jury eats candies before a live audience. The award-winning factory or import company gets a unique handmade trophy.

The other event, Salmiakkipiknik is during summertime in the fortress island Suomenlinna  (Sveaborg, in Swedish) just outside Helsinki. All participants are the piknik jury tasting candies brought by the Salmiak Conclave. The verdict will be sent to the candy factories and importors.

At Salmiakkipiknik events, in addition to candies, we tend to enjoy vinyl entertainment: Telly ”Kojak” Savalas, Roger Whittaker, Herreys, Boney M and other loveable artists. Photo: Finnish Salty Liquorice Association
